When it comes to health in this day and age it appears as if we tend to follow the latest trend in order to get that desired look or level of health that we all crave, behold, Turmeric an all natural time tested herb that's benefits just might surprise even you. Turmeric is a spice with tremendous history as both a unique ingredient commonly known to give curry its yellow color as well as a medicinal herb with roots that date back nearly 4,000 years to the Vedic culture in India. Long used in the Ayurvedic community as both a spice and a component to religious ceremonies, Turmeric has been a much heralded commodity throughout history and certainly still has a use in today's world.

1. Anti-Inflammatory: The active ingredient found in Turmeric is known as curcumin which is a very strong anti-inflammatory in nature and has been shown to be as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs. Inflammation is however not something to fear, it is our bodies way of healing itself and becoming stronger. Without inflammation we cannot heal damage, however too much inflammation can cause a lack of homeostasis which a natural anti inflammatory like Turmeric can help to balance while also providing nutritional benefits.

2. Antioxidant: Turmeric is an extremely potent antioxidant which is crucial as a defense mechanism to our system from things like chemical, physical and emotional stress. These Antioxidants help prevent the damage of free radicals which are extremely reactive unpaired electrons caused by these stresses. Another amazing ability of this amazing root is its ability to stimulate the body’s own antioxidant system further strengthening our bodies defense against stress.

3. Heart Health: Should help prevent against Heart disease as a result of improving the function of the Endothelium,a single layer of cells which line the blood vessels and many organs as well as bodily cavities. This lining is tasked with separating the circulating blood or lymph in the Lumen from the rest of the vessel wall.

4. Depression: May help combat depression which many scientists believe may have some roots in inflammation or possibly the loss of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) while the curcumin found in Turmeric helps boost BDNF while also bringing anti inflammatory effects to the table, thus potentially helping your body deal with the stress of depression. (Side note: I Appreciate you)

5. Dog Friendly: Potent, safe and natural anti-inflammatory for dogs. Perhaps my favorite use of this wonderful spice is for my best pal, my puppy Jeter, who use to limp and occasionally could not put any weight on his back right paw which is what caused me to research Turmeric in the first place. Turmeric is generally safe for dogs and could help manage inflammation while also preventing any other inflammatory diseases from starting in both dogs and humans, scientists believe inflammation is at least partially responsible for cancer as well as Alzheimer's disease.
