Recently with all of this breaking news and discussions about Viruses and illness sweeping our planet, I thought I would piece together a top 5 list of immune system boosting activities which are known to help us all stay healthy and strong.

Exercise: I know, you’ve heard it before “exercise helps keep you strong and young” but did you know it is hugely beneficial to immune system health and function? First and foremost exercise flushes the lungs and airways of bacteria which may reduce your chances of getting sick in the first place. Exercise also causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells causing them to circulate more rapidly, allowing them the ability to conquer viruses much more efficiently. Lastly exercise slows down the release of certain stress hormones allowing your body more time and efficiency in regards to healing.

Sleep: Sleep is our body’s chance to recover from the stresses we endure (chemical, physical and emotional) throughout our day to day lives. During sleep our bodies release proteins known as cytokines which need to increase during times of stress, whether it be a sickness or any other form of stress. Also during sleep our body creates more infection fighting antibodies and cells which help keep us healthy and less prone to becoming ill.

Healthy Diet: Eating a healthy diet dense in nutrition is absolutely essential when it comes to staying optimally healthy, therefore it would make even more sense to ensure our body has everything it needs to be strong during trying times. We all know Vitamin C is essential to a healthy immune system due to its antioxidant effects but where can we find this water-soluble vitamin in high amounts? The answers include Broccoli, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower, Kale, Kiwi, Orange Juice, Papaya, Peppers, Strawberries and tomatoes are all excellent Vitamin C rich foods. Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamin in general as it is involved in many extremely important bodily processes. Decreases in Vitamin D have shown decreased ability to fight infection as well as increased autoimmunity, Vitamin D is fat soluble and helps mineralization of collagen matrix in bone as it helps efficiency of calcium absorption. We find Vitamin D in salmon, egg yolks, Yogurt, mushrooms and of course absorption of sunlight, which is why it is important to supplement or ensure proper Vitamin D levels during times of the year with less sunlight. Sunlight is extremely beneficial to our mental health as it reconnects us with our natural rhythms which are important for well-being.

Hydration: Water is arguably nature’s most precious resource and is the foundation of both life and abundant health. Our cells need hydration to perform many life processes including regulating the immune system’s ability to function properly. Being well hydrated greatly increases the cells ability to clean itself and requires no digestion as a result of being absorbed into the body via osmosis which means more energy for you due to not needing to spend any energy on the digestion itself.

Relaxation: Our body needs time to relax and process our daily lives in order to maintain homeostasis and keep systems running smoothly. I often find it hard to devote enough time to this one, but I do make a conscious intention of trying to relax daily. Through practicing things like meditation, and just sitting back and taking in my environment while doing my best to stay in the present moment, I must admit after a while this has proven quite useful. When we are at rest our parasympathetic mode takes over control from the sympathetic “fight/flight” mode resulting in healing and repair of damage also known as our “rest & digest” mode, we gain energy and process our day to day life here. When in parasympathetic mode we digest our food properly, resulting in increased energy and improved immune function.

In Conclusion, This list is essentially just a reminder that health is based mainly on fundamental principles and abundant health is achieved through consistent practice just like anything in life, over time you become better at things, so give one a try and implement it in your day to day life...before you know it the rest will come! I appreciate your time!
